Sigh.) I'm assuming you have already figured out the G1000 panels and are familiar with Garmin autopilots. (After landing, xplane ATS taxied me to take off on a runway covered in X-es. when xplane ATS steered me into a hillside at night in clouds, the plane warned me in time to avoid a crash. I'm still new to this plane and so far it flies great. the link can be found on the plane description page at the xplane org store. Entering the serial number, I had to do it manually, the paste function always chopped off the last digit.

How to get the serial number popup to popup, I don't know, it just happened sometime during the first flight and all of a sudden the plane worked much better. I had some trouble at first but realized I needed to enter a serial number. I'm on my second flight with this aircraft. I haven't tried to just follow Nav 1 to a VOR after tuning the radio manually. I assume you've noticed the A> O> and C> buttons on the left with their popups. maybe this helps, but all I've flown is using GPS with a FMS flightplan so far and haven't had issues.
I reread what you wrote and think perhaps you need to hit the CDI button at the bottom of the screen until NAV 1 appears on the compass rose on the display.
