This episode goes a bit into the lore of the game as well as real stories related to the early days of gaming which may have inspired the legend of Polybius.Īll in all, a good episode, and a good game related horror story, worth sharing in these last few days of October. We’re coming up on Halloween, however, and this year James gave us something a little more intense for his Halloween AVGN episode: a 6 part mini-series covering the urban legend of Polybius, a game that is rumored to have existed for a very short time in the 80’s, and mysteriously disappeared after many strange events happened surrounding it.

James hamming it up is the complete opposite of how you should handle a creepypasta, which are supposed to be subtle.īut of course my opinion doesn't matter, because if you ask Jamesy or his fanboys or his equally popular youtuber friends who would never say anything bad about him, they will say it was deliberate, ya know, because he was going for that old campy B-movie vibe, like the old Universal and Hammer harrar movies! suuure.Since I’m planning to eventually review every single episode of the series (probably a never ending task, as I think about it) I’ve been avoiding covering AVGN episodes on release – as nice as it would be to hit them while they are hot, I feel like I might wind up, down the line, running into my previous coverage and just repeating myself for the reviews – in fact, covering new episodes is the reason I decided to start reviewing the classic ones, and while I could keep them going in tandem, it just wouldn’t be worth it, I think, down the line.
James is obsessed with hamming his acting up, especially when he's playing an "insane" character and that just fucking kills the entire polybius video. In fact, not only does he not add anything new, he subtracts from it by not showing us the game and instead showing us his exaggerated fake reactions to the game. The fake Polybius arcade machine where he pretends to play it is just an expensive extension of what youtubers back then would do, which was showing gameplay of that fan-made polybius game that was passed off as a genuine ROM of the original game He didn't even bother to add anything new to the story or anything. Like I said, he was waaay too fucking late to the polybius bandwagon. There's two problems with his Polybius video:

What did James come up with? he rented an entire warehouse full of arcade games where he supposedly found the polybius game and then records himself pretending to play it and not even letting the audience see the game. With all the limitations they had, those tiny channels really tried their best to make the urban legend feel like it could be real or that it could have happened. They would even try to make it more "shocking" by showing clips of what the video game was supposed to look like, found footage style and would also have warnings like "this game can cause serious psychological damage, viewer discretion is advised". I remember watching dozens of videos about it that were made by channels with less than 10K subs and they were of higher quality. I remember reading plenty of creepypastas about the Polybius a decade ago when I was a kid that were several times scarier and more entertaining than what James came up with. It was boring as all hell to be honest, which is not surprising, seeing how he joined the "spoopy polybius urban legend" bandwagon too late. I've never knew that the problems go so much deeper than what i'll ever expect. And this is a performance coming from a man who started and created around 500+ films?Īnd now following this subreddit and watching videos about Cinemassacre's situation for the past few weeks made my eyes open. It was school play type of bad! Every movement he made (with moving the cameras and such) was SO forced and fake, i cringed from inside out. So painful, in fact, that for a moment i kinda wanted to stop the madness.
Looking at it, James couldn't have been the corniest of all corn that exists. I was so captivated while watching it, learning everything about the urban legend and James basically giving in my eyes a GREAT AND AN AMAZING PERFORMANCE (lol).Īnd now watching it again 3 years later, especially comparing it to videos from other creators. That controversy in AVGN's history is also a red flag that digs the hole deeper. As many had pointed out, last year, someone actually noticed that AVGN’s Polybius thumbnail art seems to be a duplicate of another thumbnail from another Youtube video. I remember when it came out as a Haloween episode and i was very excited about it (i was 15, so. There seems to also be a problem in other aspects of James’ Polybius video.
